Types of Roll20 Marketplace Content

The Roll20 Marketplace sells the following content:

  • Art Packs (aka Token Sets)
  • Token Marker Sets
  • RPG Rulebooks, Bestiaries, and Rule Expansions
  • Adventures
  • Board & Card Games
  • Play Aids and VTT Components
  • Packages & Discount Bundles

Art Packs

Art Packs are collections of static and/or animated image assets that a Partner uploads as a set. These images can be pulled directly from the Art Library tab of the Roll20 Tabletop for use in a Customer's games. The art assets can also be batch downloaded by the Customer if the Partner enables that permission on the product.

The following are subcategories of Art Packs:

Art Packs containing Tokens are collections of images that represent game pieces, miniatures, character portraits, or other similar elements that will be used on the virtual tabletop. These images are generally intended to be moved around quite often on the Tokens Layer of the Roll20 Tabletop.

They are further classified as:

  • Figures: Transparent, full-body, non-bordered characters
  • Bordered Tokens: Token portraits cropped within a border
  • Portraits: Character portraits, often used for Character entries, Handouts, or Avatars
  • Token Elements: Token borders, flair, effects, or templates for customers to create their own Tokens
  • Status Icons: Status overlays for Tokens (ex: poisoned) - sometimes used interchangeably with Token Markers (see below)

Token Marker Sets

A Token Marker is an overlay element that's available to use on any Token object on the Tabletop. They are small icons that can be used to represent elements such as status ailments, ammunition counters, or help differentiate between multiples of the same Token image. Every Roll20 game comes with a default set of Token Markers, but with Token Marker Sets, players can replace the default Token Markers in their games with ones provided by Partners instead.

Note: All Token Marker Sets must be download-enabled due to how they are installed by the Customer.

RPG Rulebooks, Bestiaries, and Rule Expansions

TTRPG Rule Systems are sold as two different types of products: Compendiums and Module/Addons

Compendiums

Compendiums convert TTRPG rulebooks for use on Roll20 as structured data. They can then be purchased and browsed on-site on the Compendium page or within the Roll20 Tabletop. The Compendium can also be shared with a limited number of players in-game (depending on the subscription tier of the Customer).

The building of Compendium is a very complex process and currently can only be done with Roll20 assistance. We recommend hiring one of our vetted freelance conversion contractors who have access and are knowledgeable of the tools required for creating and QAing Compendiums.

Rule Systems as Modules or Addons

The creation of a Ruleset as Game Modules or Addons is a much easier product for Partners to create in-house or with the assistance of a contractor. Unless you're working with an entire rule system, you are best creating an Addon item that can be installed directly into an existing game.

The process of creating this type of product is very similar to how an Adventure or Play Aid is made. Pages will likely not be utilized here in favor of filling out the Journal tab with Character and Handout entries to convert over the system's rules and stat blocks. Customized Macros and Rollable Tables will also be useful for this product.

Adventures

Adventures on the Roll20 Marketplace are self-contained campaign templates that are either standalone (Modules) or added to a Customer's exisiting game (Addons). These products are constructed with everything needed to play the content without requiring the Customer to use external materials.

Players can expect Adventure products to include the following features:

  • Battlemaps, potentially with Dynamic Lighting
  • Pre-made Character and NPC Sheets
  • Tokens
  • Features such as Audio, Macros, or Rollable Tables
  • All of the copy text of the Adventure in accessible Handouts

Adventures are further classified on the Marketplace by campaign length:

  • One-Shots: Can be completed in one 4-hour session
  • Short Campaigns: Intended for two to eight 4-hour sessions
  • Long Campaigns: Intended for nine or more 4-hour sessions

Board & Card Games

Board & Card Games are designed exactly like Adventure content. They are self-contained campaign templates that are standalone (Modules) or added to a Customer's game either via an Addon. These products contain everything you need to play the board game on the Roll20 Tabletop.

Pages may include game board graphics with components represented as Tokens. Game rules are included as Handouts under the Journal Tab. Card Deck and Rollable Tables may be utilized as needed.

Play Aids are supplemental elements that can be added to any existing Roll20 Game via an Addon.

They can contain Rollable Tables, custom Card Decks, story hooks and pre-written encounters, location settings, Maps with Dynamic Lighting, treasury lists, puzzles, and more.

Packages & Discount Bundles

Packages and Discount Bundles are products that group Marketplace sub-items together to provide convenient curated purchases. Here’s how Bundles and Packages differ:

Packages

Packages contain content that can only be obtained by purchasing the Package and are typically used by our Licensed Publishers to offer Compendiums along with Art Packs and adventures that are not sold separately. Their discounts are typically already built into the price of the item, and they do not qualify for Dynamic Pricing.

A common example of a Package is a collection of the following sub-items: a rulebook, a one-shot adventure for that game system, and a pack of Tokens.

Discount Bundles

Bundles contain items that are usually for sale individually outside of the Bundle. They may offer up to a 30% discount off the combined price of the items contained within. They offer Dynamic Pricing, which provides an additional price reduction if a purchaser already owns one or more of the sub-items, meaning their purchase will only charge them for the unowned items.

Creators can add any type of Marketplace item to a Discount Bundle.
