The information below covers topics relevant to current and prospective Roll20 Publisher Partners. If you have a question that falls outside of these examples, feel free to contact us by emailing licensing@roll20.net.
Can Roll20 Convert My Content For Me?
Roll20 has finite resources in regards to time and staff power for handling in-house conversions of Publisher content. We might not have availability to convert your content depending on our schedule and our existing workload. You will see a faster turnaround with product conversions if you work 1-on-1 with a freelance contractor who is knowledgeable about the conversion process for our platform.
Contact us by emailing licensing@roll20.net with the subject line "Product Conversion" if you want to know if we have any openings for in-house conversions of your products or assistance with selecting vetted freelance conversion contractors.
Art Packs, Card Decks, and other Play Aids
Art Packs (Figures, Bordered Tokens, Portraits, Maps, etc.) are the easiest products to upload and sell on the Marketplace.
Card Decks, Card Games, and other Play Aids normally take the form of a Game Addon. They take slightly longer to build compared to Art Packs but are also straightforward to create.
Adventure and Rulebook Modules and Addons
Adventure and Rulebook Modules and Game Addons are more complex to build than Art Packs but not as complex as Character Sheets or Compendiums. They will require an existing character sheet to be a functioning Marketplace Product. If you are the Publisher of a specific rule system, we highly recommend building and maintaining a Roll20 Character Sheet.
Character Sheets
Roll20 Character Sheets are created using a combination of HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Many game systems already have community-developed Character Sheets, but we recommend that any partnered Publishers maintain their own.
If a Publisher is in complete control of a Character Sheet and its related updates and maintenance, it is eligible to become one of our "Publisher Supported" Character Sheets. This is a special designation available to GMs during their character sheet selection process of game creation. If you would like your submitted character sheet on this list, please contact us by emailing licensing@roll20.net with the subject line "Publisher Supported Sheet"
The length of development time for a Character Sheet can range from 20-500+ hours depending on the game system's complexity.
To learn more about Character Sheet creation, visit the Building Character Sheets article on the Roll20 Help Center. Our GitHub repository for sheets is located here.
Compendium Products
Compendiums are "books" of indexed and categorized series of web pages devoted to a particular RPG rule system. It behaves and is designed similarly to a mini wiki. A Compendium can be browsed outside the Roll20 Tabletop, but it also can be used within a game for quick rule searches. Compendiums can populate fields on a Character Sheet (i.e. equipment, spells, attack macros) via drag-and-drop capability if the sheet is designed for it.
Adding structured data Compendiums on Roll20 is a time and labor-intensive process. More information about Compendiums can be found here.
The length of development time for the average Compendium ranges from 100-400 hours.
Presently all Compendium products require hands-on assistance from Roll20 Staff. If you can't have your products developed internally by Roll20 Staff, we can provide vetted freelance contractors who can do this work for you.
Character Builder Products
Character builders behave like application wizards for creating characters. They are built as an expansion of a Character Sheet. Character Builders often require a Compendium to pull its character creation rules from, unless your game system is very simple.
At this time, we are only accepting Character Builder Compendiums that have been created by Publishers or contractors with previous Charactermancer experience. If you are interested in working with one of our vetted contractors, please contact us by emailing licensing@roll20.net with the subject line “Character Builder Contractor.”
The length of development time for a Character Builder range from 200-500+ hours.
Game List
Roll20 users can choose from a preexisting list of game systems when filling out a user profile, creating a game, or making a Looking for Group listing. If you would like your system added to our games list, it first needs a Character Sheet. If you have a game on Roll20 that doesn’t require a Character Sheet (such as For the Queen or Dialect) please contact us by emailing licensing@roll20.net with the subject line “Game List” with your request.
